East Messoyakha field produces the first million tons of oil

20 February 2017

Messoyakhaneftegaz, a joint venture of Gazprom Neft and Rosneft, produced its millionth ton of oil. This rate was achieved in less than 5 months since the beginning of production at the most northern Russian oil and gas condensate  field.

The result was ensured by efficient geological and technical activities and implementation of advanced methods for stimulating tight reserves production. It is East Messoyakha field where new wells were drilled large-scale using fishbone technology. This technology makes it possible to increase the starting flow-rate of the wells by 30-40% compared with a traditional horizontal well.

Production of the first million tons of oil at East Messoyakha proves right the chosen development rate and the efficient use of modern drilling technologies and well stimulation.

At the moment, 94 operating wells at East Messoyakha account for the average daily production of 7300 tons.

It is planned to significantly enhance drilling scope at the field in 2017.  For this purpose 11 additional drilling rigs will be brought to the field. 19 rigs will be operating at East Messoyakha simultaneously. It is expected that new wells will make up to 50% of the whole production of Messoyakhaneftegaz in 2017.

Notes for editors:

East Messoyakha field is situated in Tazov district of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, 340 km north of Novy Urengoy. Recoverable reserves of the field  amount for more than 340 mln tons of oil. The field is developed by Messoyakhaneftegaz, which is equally owned by Gazprom Neft (project’s operator) and Rosneft. On September 21, 2016 the president of Russia Vladimir Putin launched operations at the field via video linkup.

Fishbone is a technology of drilling of horizontal wells with multiple branches. This construction significantly increases the coverage of oil-saturated areas compared with traditional horizontal well with smaller scope of drilling activities.
